Birthplace of Cocoa
Ecuador is sometimes acknowledged as the “birthplace of cocoa” because it possesses a rich historical heritage of archaeological objects associated with cocoa residue found in Aztec-Mayan ruins. Earthenware products from the sites show traces of cocoa content, an indicator that the cacao tree could have grown here before 3000 B.C.
No.2 Cocoa Beans Exporter
Ecuador ranks third in global cocoa production and first in the production of fine flavour cocoa. In 2022, it came second in cocoa bean exports after Ivory Coast, with an export value of $915.5 million. Its 2023 aggregate export value of cocoa beans and cocoa products reached 352,000 tonnes.
Direct Farmer-Manufacturer Commerce
Farmers in Ecuador sell their cocoa directly to chocolate makers such as Toak Chocolate, which brings them handsome farm gate offers. While, for instance, the producer price of wet cacao beans in conventional markets was just $0.55 per kg in 2021, farmers selling directly to Toak could earn up to $4.41 a kg.
A further boost to this relationship is the fact that the world’s biggest chocolate maker, Barry Callebaut has a factory in Ecuador. Starting 2022, the company established 640-acre sustainable practices-driven cocoa farm in Ecuador. This is set to improve the market value of the country’s cocoa which could also benefit farmers’ prices.
